What a nice visit, the best visit I've had since I've been very sick. I keep looking at the pictures and reading the cards and that helps pick me up. I can't wait to visit ya'll it seems as if I've know ya'll for my whole life. I think my 3yr old met him a girlfriend the day of our visit. That is all he's talked about "Mama when are they coming back?" I want to thank you for thinking about making me feel good during these trying times and let you know not 1 day has passed that I have not enjoyed everything. For a long time I felt like I was in a cage just looking at 4 walls and didn't want anyone to know that I had MS and was in a wheel chair it will be 2yr's but everyone got a phone call so it wasn't like "where is Dawn?" I knew if I called it would never come up but what I was doing is robbing myself of many, many prayers to heal me, so the 1 thing I've learned is when something has taken you down, don't be ashamed and tell everyone so they can pray for you. I thought I could do !
it all by myself until I lost the man who meant the most to me my papa. I'm out of room. Always Dawn Ivie-Russell

I have enjoyed visiting your web site.  I specially like the history of the church because my Uncle Iverson Pope's grand father Daniel G. Pope was a beloved pastor there and is also buried there.

  • Dear Church Family:

Where do we as a family begin thanking you for the blessings that the Church has bestowed upon us as a family?

The gift you give is beyond measure, worth too much to count or weigh. To us as a family it is a priceless treasure that grows in value everyday. Your prayers, service, compassion, contributions and care inspire us to set you apart. You give to our family without selfishness.

Summer loves this church so much. For quiet some time she has been “working on Mommy and Daddy”, of course the Lord was working through her. She would come in on Sunday’s and say “I love church, you wanna come with me next time?” It was because she had sensed the love and caring being here and she was excited!

Thank you so much for every smile you have put on Summer’s face. As a mom, you don’t realize until they are not there how precious each and every one is. Summer still has a long road to travel, and I know that you will be lifting us up in prayer. Sometimes, your prayers have to speak for us, as sometimes we are at a loss for words. This has been an overwhelming experience for our family. Through you and the Lord we have faced our days with hope.

The Lord blessed us when we found out Hunter was a match and would be able to donate his marrow.
The process of the bone marrow transplant is long and strenuous. She will be sent to Emory in Atlanta once her chemo is completed to start this process. They are telling us that the sooner that this happens the better. This transplant will take a terrible toll on our little Summer.  She will be in isolation for a couple of months afterwards and she does not understand. When we found out we would be undergoing the bone marrow transplant she looked at me crying and asked “Mommy, why did God let me slip through his fingers?”. Such a mature and understandable question coming from our baby. I explained that God did not let her slip through his fingers but caught her when she was falling.

The Doctors in Macon and Atlanta do not seem sure that the BMT would be best for Summer. Their remark to us when asked “is this what is best for Summer” is simply “this is protocol”.  Needless to say, we left Atlanta Thursday with unanswered questions. We need the Lord to provide clarification to the Doctor’s involved and to us as parents, we need a clear and concise answer on what is best for her in this situation. Of course, we do not want our babies (Summer and Hunter) to go through any  sickness that is not necessary. We are praying for a healing, but also the knowledge needed to know what is best for Summer. It is her faith and assurance that has gotten me through many nights of doubt. We ask for your prayers that peace and assurance will surround the family through this long process.

Summer is such a sweet child. And we thank the influence of Buckhorn for that.  Just recently the Hospital Chaplain visited Summer in her room and told her that we could “be very specific when we pray for things”, at that time Summer was on morphine for stomach pain, thinking she would want to pray for relief. He asked her if there was something specific she would like to pray for and she said “yes, I want to pray for the other kids that find out they have cancer, that they will know that everything will be okay”. What a blessing our baby is to us. She has touched so many lives since her diagnosis.

In closing, I sorta strayed from thanking you, once again thank you from the bottom of our hearts! The church has ministered to us in too many ways to list.

    May God Bless You
He has blessed us through you.

    Hey everybody,
I'm currently in St. Simons Island, GA at The Gathering Place.
This is a ministry that was created in 1981 to raise up
leaders in the church. So I spend my summer discipling four
local high school guys one on one weekly and leading them in a
bible study. There are many other guys that I have been able
to minister to also. We work 9-12 every morning at the boys
and girls club at no expense to them. We have weekly meetings
with the team, and with these high schoolers that have
challenged in their faith to reach their lost friends. We have
a couple of nights of outreach with the intent to form
relationships with people that exemplify how Christ reached
out to people. God is working in this ministry, and I'm
blessed to a part of it and growing during this season. But, I
need two things. I need your prayers. This ministry needs to
be covered from all angles with shouts of praise and prayers
to our Father. I also need your financial support. We raise
the money we receive as a group. This means that we also split
the total amount. If you do choose to bless us with you
offerings, it will count as a tax write-off, but only if you
make your check out to The Gathering Place. Write a note
saying that it will count under my name, Eric Stewart. The
address is The Gathering Place P.O. Box 772
    Brunswick, GA 31521
For those who have already blessed us, I thank you with all of my heart.
Please know that without you, this ministry would not flourish, in prayers
and support. Thank you all so much, I love you deeply.
          -Eric Stewart

No one should ever deny animals salvation. It's crazy and cruel and it should be spoken about in churches. They have a right to always exist and a soul and a right to life too. Shame on anyone who condemns then to nothingness. Maybe they will experience it themselves and see if they like it.  They have a right not to be killed, a right to life not to be eaten and not to be denied souls. Xhristianity denies them existence and in order will one day loose their own existence by condemning animals and denying them and part of eternity. Woe to those who do this to them and they ought to be severely ashamed of themselves

    Dear church family of mine,

I just got back from my spring break mission trip to Port Charlotte/Punta Gorda, Florida. Our GSU Wesley Foundation had two groups going out on the field this break, the other was to Mexico. Our purpose in going was to help those who suffered from the four hurricanes that hit Florida this past year. Most would assume that the majority of the rebuilding has taken place. This, unfortunately, is not the truth. Debris is still prominent around the area. With a shortage of dumpsters, the process has been slowed down. We worked with a group called IINCC, which is a community of believers working together to spread relief in the area. We stayed at Peace Lutheran Church for the week, who showed us so much love with their delicious food and an array of air mattresses to save our backs from concrete floors.

We were given different job sites everyday. Some took longer than expected, and some needs were quickly given. Our jobs included tarping roofs to prevent leaking, soffet and facia work, painting, drywall, replacing a whole roof, debris removal, and removing dead trees that were in need of a nice chain saw visit. We undoubtedly saw Christ at work through us, in our group, and in the people we were helping. A man named Anthony was in need of tarping around his chimney and soffet and facia work on the left side of his house. We did that and more. We were able to retarp most of the front of his house. This took around 4 20'x20' tarps. We couldn't afford to buy him new soffet, but we were able to attach chicken wire to give him the venting that he needed. Apparently he was most concerned with squirrels that had been getting into his attic and climbing down through his chimney and onto his living room floor. We made sure that he would be safe from the squirrels, but we also made sure that the new tarps would hold up better than the previous ones. When we met Anthony, he seemed like a bitter, tired, older man. The next day when we were finished, we asked him, just as we did with every household, to pray with us for him and his house. He broke down into tears. His heart was softened from the love that he experienced from Christ through us. It was the most amazing moment in my week. But we had several other great times in which we were able to bless those affected by the hurricanes. Just a few names that I want you all to lift up: Anthony, Ralph, Chris, Gerald, and other names that escape my memory. Please pray for them, the insurance companies that are withholding money from victims, and the construction companies that are overcharging the citizens of Florida. There are people hurting emotionally, and they need the love of Christ poured on them like a mighty hurricane. Thank you for showing me that love my entire life. Know that I'm a missionary in Statesboro as well as the trips that I go on and at the Gathering Place (http://www.thegp.org) with Buckhorn UMC as my roots and as my family. Just as you have poured into me, I am pouring into others. If you want to keep up with our GSU Wesley Foundation, here's the website:   http://www.gsuwesley.org

Also, my birthday is Tuesday (3/22/84). I'll be celebrating my 21st birthday with some sparkling white grape juice. I love that stuff! Be blessed and know that I'm praying for you all!

     Love,

I am Allen Dobson from Mt. Pleasant South Carolina a suburb of Charleston S.C. I have met a group of family members on line and we are doing amateur genealogy on the Benford families. Some of our research shows that a Robert M. Benford and Mary were from the Dexter area and were most likely farmers. They had a relative Ashley M."Ash" Benford who was married into the Steven's Family of Steven's Pottery it is believed this "Ash" often visited the Dexter area if you are aware of any Benford's from that area would ya'll pass this info on to them??
I can be reach best at allen29464@yahoo.com

Thanks and I enjoyed reading about your Church and it's proud history.

I have relatives buried in the Buckhorn cemetery and visit as often as I can.  I attended the Buckhorn School reunion August 14, and had a wonderful time.  I was fortunate enough to have lunch next to pastor Jimmy and during our conversation, I found that Buckhorn is very fortunate to have such a dedicated and compassionate pastor.  I enjoyed the improvements you have made to the parking lots and can see that the church has some dedicated and committed members.

I live in Crestview Hills, Ky.  I might add that I was born in a house that is no longer standing on the other side of the branch of the church.
Hope to visit again when I am in your area.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

I wanted to say thank you for allowing me to come and share about my mission trip to China last month. It blessed me so much how lovingly the entire congregation received me and my family. It thrills me to go into a group of new people and know that I'm in the midst of family.

Just a quick update....Pastor Paul, one of the Chinese pastors that I spoke of last month, was attacked along with several members of his congregation while they were praying. The "gangsters" beat Pastor Paul and his church members. Pastor Paul's spleen was ruptured and he was in the hospital for a couple of days. But our God, the healer touched him and he was home quickly and has completely recovered.  Please continue to pray for their safety and for the safety of all the house churches in China.

The trip for August is on it's way. I have 7 fellow workers that are going to be "donkeys". Please pray for us, that nothing will hinder what God has called us to do. The trip for January is still in the planning stages. It looks like it will be  Jan. 22-29. This date is tentative. We may actually make it a Long trip which means that not only would we do the donkey part of it but we would stay in mainland China and do some of the distribution to those that are in need. This would mean that the trip would be 9 or 10 days long instead of 7, so please let everyone who showed interest in taking a trip in January know. I'd like some feedback as to whether or not people would want to do that or just stick to the donkey crossings.

Thank you again, I pray that you'll all be abundantly blessed by our Lord, Jesus Christ for your support of this ministry!!

         In His Service,

This is a great website!  I love keeping up with what's going on in Georgia!

Did Mr. Kahale post his essay, or was it posted by someone playing "devil's advocate?"  There are many times that our prayers are not answered in the affirmative, but that does not mean that our prayers are not answered.  For example, several years ago, I had friends in Atlanta who wanted to sell their house.  They wanted to upgrade, and they had found a house that would have meant an extra 10 minutes to the husband's commute. They put their house on the market, and even after several months, it did not sell.  The housing market seemed to be doing well at that time, and other houses in the neighborhood were selling without difficulty.  They did not understand why the house did not sell, but they felt that their answer from God was, "no."
About six months later, the husband's company relocated to a completely different part of town.  The commute from where they wanted to live would have been nearly impossible.  Again, they put their house on the market, and it sold quickly.  They were able to buy a new house in an area that cut the commute time to five minutes. This, again, may sound trivial in light of wars, famines, forest fires etc..., but it shows that God is a personal God who cares for those who love him.

TUPELO — Walter Houston, described by family members as a devoted Christian, died Monday after waiting 70 years for God to give him clear direction about what to do with his life. "He hung around the house and prayed a lot, but just never got that confirmation," his wife Ruby said. "Sometimes he thought he heard God's voice, but then he wouldn't be sure, and he'd start the process all over again." Houston, she says, never really figured out what his life was about, but felt content to pray continuously about what he might do for the Lord. Whenever he was about to take action, he would pull back "because he didn't want to disappoint God or go against him in any way," Ruby says. "He was very sensitive to always remain in God's will. That was primary to him." Friends say they liked Walter though he seemed not to capitalize on his talents. "Walter had a number of skills he never got around to using," says longtime friend Timothy Burns. "He worked very well with wood and had a storyteller side to him, too. I always told him, 'Take a risk. Try something new if you're not happy,' but he was too afraid of letting the Lord down." To his credit, they say, Houston, who worked mostly as a handyman, was able to pay off the mortgage on the couple's modest home.

    Web Servant's Comments:

This story is such a sad one. Walter spent his whole life seeking God's will and never did anything for God. What is God's will? Did Walter not have a bible? Jesus said, "if you love me, you will keep my commandments." Jesus did give us some commandments to get us started in His will.

Treat people as you want to be treated (Matthew 7:12)

    I desire compassion (Matthew 12:7)

Love God with all your heart, soul and mind (Matthew 22:37)

Love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:39)

Feed the hungry, give the thirsty something to drink, invite in the stranger, visit the sick and those in prison (Matthew 25:34-46)

Go into the world and preach the gospel to all creation (Mark 16:15)

These are just a few commandments that Jesus gave. Yes there are situations that we can't point to a verse and know God's will, such as what job should we take. Those decisions take prayer and listening, but Jesus gave us plenty of commandments to keep us busy until He returns.

Blessings to the FAITHFUL BRIDE, Wonderful web site! Thanks to all who had a part in it. Very professional. I feel sorry for those who, by their own comments, do not trust in prayer or believe in God. Wonder why they try so hard to stop that which they think does not work or exist?? Let us continue to love and pray for them. Acts chapter 12 tells about the power of prayer for Simon Peter while he was in prison. Isn't it awesome that Almighty God Creator of everything would care for and listen to His children? Isn't God Great? Prayers and hugs to all of you.

People seem to pray for almost everything: health, safety, security, good grades in school, job promotion, wealth, or for loftier goals like world peace and an end to human suffering. Prayer is also used for ill, calling upon "God" for conceit, fraud, or revenge. But do these innumerable prayers actually work? Does prayer affect outcomes? If a person contracts a disease, his or her family may pray for their recovery. When the patient gets better, the family may think that the prayers caused the healing If a woman becomes pregnant, she and her husband may pray for a healthy child. When the child is born in good health, the couple may believe that their prayers were answered. If a hurricane threatens to destroy a home, the occupants may pray for their safety. If the house is spared, the residents may assume that the prayers protected them. In each of these examples, however, it is unlikely the prayers had anything to do with the outcomes. Although some claim that prayers give comfort to believers in distress, this is hardly a reason to presume they actually affect outcomes. When someone prays, even silently, it is assumed that the person is appealing to a "higher power" or an "Almighty God." Christians, for instance, claim that their "God" is all-powerful and responds directly to individual or collective prayers. But not all prayers are answered, as many people who pray for healing or survival die nonetheless. Those who pray for safety and security are still robbed or beaten. Students who pray for good test grades often fail anyway. Employees who pray for promotion are still rejected or laid-off from their jobs. Even if prayer appears to work sometimes, it certainly does not work all of the time. I will argue, however, that prayer does not work at all; that it is at best a superfluous mental exercise; a last-ditch attempt to escape from reality when control of a situation either is or seems to be lost. Observe that prayer is only claimed to work under conditions where the desired result is probable within reason. In the three examples above, the absence of prayer would not have changed the outcome. If a person's arm or leg is bitten off and eaten by a shark, no prayer will cause the limb to grow back. If a person dies and is buried, no prayer is going to bring the deceased back to life. If a house burns to the ground, no prayer will cause the structure to restore itself. If an airplane breaks apart and crashes into the ocean, no prayer will return the aircraft to the sky and safe landing. Millions of believers pray for world peace, yet wars have raged around the planet unabatedly for centuries. Prayers for an end to human suffering have had no effect, as millions of children continue to starve to death every year. Prayer does not affect outcomes anymore than animal sacrifices, astrological events, or voodoo spells. The fact that prayer never works in situations where the desired result is not already probable within reason, is either proof that prayer does not work at all or that "God" is limited in power. In this matter, the principle of parsimony (Occam's Razor) leads logical minds to conclude that prayer has no effect on anything. Prayer is superfluous at best, but for some, prayer is a delusion, and in extreme cases may become a harmful neurosis.

Great Work, Jimmy. The church's website is impressive, your writings are well thought out, and well articulated. Was good to see you and Vonda the other Saturday night. Sorry I missed seeing your and Vonda's anniversary waltz! God bless!

Darren and Ruby, I have been so blessed by reading this web site. I've been sitting here printing things out for the past 30 min. or longer to carry for my mom to read. She will be blessed to read these. We love you both so very much.

Hello from Ruskin, Florida, I'm Jan Liles, the secretary at First Baptist Church in Ruskin. Darren Bryan called our office today to ask us to check out your web site. His wife (Ruby) was saved on one of our bus routes here many years ago. She wrote an article (Life's Lessons) and mentioned a lady by the name of Mrs. Buzbee who was Ruby's bus captain. My husband drove the bus for Mrs. Buzbee at the time when Ruby was attending our church. I have printed the article written by Ruby which mentioned Mrs. Buzbee. Mrs. Buzbee is still attending church here and very activity and I will see that she receives this information. Thank you for your testimony. May the Lord keep blessing your ministry in Dexter, Georgia.
    In Christian Love,
    Jan Liles

GREAT WEB PAGE. Smooth and quick transitions from one page to next link. Good details about ministries without being too much. I love the "Life lessons" section. It makes it more real. I also like how quick your pictures are loading up. Thank you so much for sharing this web site with me. P.S. Where did G.W. learn to do such a good job with his writing (Life Lessons)? It was AWESOME. I worked several of those years in the Textile plant with him, and I am a better man because of knowing him...
    God bless you all.

Darren, Thank you for sending me information about your Buckhorn's web page. IT IS GREAT! It is so colorful and bright and encouraging! I was encouraged by Bro. Jimmy's devotional. I have been a little overwhelmed recently by so many changes. And then, Jimmy reminds us that life and change are a gift of God...until he calls us home. I needed that important Biblical perspective. And then, I was inspired again by Ruby's story. I first heard her story one Sunday at Gethsemane... when you two were filling in as lay speakers..... and I was so deeply touched....even to tears...by her wonderful testimony. We must never give up in bringing people to Jesus Christ. Thank you, Ruby, for sharing your heart and your life and your witness. Thank you Darren for this ministry through the web page. Bless you Jimmy and Vonda for your continuing ministry to so many people who know you and love.

This looks great. It is so informative and so friendly just like your wonderful church there. We miss getting to see you guys more often; but, we are in ministry now full time in Bluefield, VA and it is just harder to get away for a weekend or any other time!! I will keep a check on things and enjoy watching the church grow and mature spiritually. We love each of you,

Fantastic job!! Just to think that a small country church in Dexter, GA could reach all the way to Henderson, KY with God's Word! And even around the world! We'll keep checking on you. May even use the Upper Room devotional access through your website. Looking forward to seeing more!! You'll be in our prayers! Jesus loves you and we do, too!
