Church History

1969

Buckhorn United Methodist Church, first known as the Darsey Meeting House, traces it's roots back to 1824 when a Methodist Society was organized in the area. The rich heritage of the church's first ninety years includes joyful baptisms in Buckhorn creek and annual "brush arbor" tent meetings at the church lasting up to two weeks, during which many persons accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

As we approach nearly 200 years of ministry in the Dexter and surrounding communities, Buckhorn has faithfully carried out its soul-saving mission through many changes. At least 77 preachers have served on the circuit, and 9 have served as full time station pastors. Buckhorn has been part of the Brunswick District (1885), the Eastman District (1890), and the McRae District (1895). Currently, Buckhorn UMC and Cadwell UMC together comprise the Buckhorn Charge in the Dublin District.

Church facilities have also undergone many changes and additions from its original log meeting house. Most recently, the Buckhorn sanctuary in 1998 underwent a beautiful interior renovation, with an enlarged choir loft, chandeliers, and stained-glass windows.

One thing has not changed through the years:  the faithful transforming love of God continues to bear fruit in and through the lives of this vibrant congregation. God is so good and we are ever thankful to Him for every blessing, and for the warm fellowship of this family of believers. By God's grace and in His strength, we desire to worship Him with gladness, witness for Him in the community, grow in the knowledge and love of our Savior Jesus Christ, and serve God and neighbor in all that we do.
